PUBLIC HEARINGS ON ALLIANT AIR POLLUTION PERMIT: CALL OUT FOR CLEANER AIR!
After so many of you spoke out at the Public Service Commission hearings and submitted written comments on Alliant Energy's proposal to build a new coal plant in Wisconsin, we're on to the next step in the process.  The proposed plant must get a permit to pollute the air from the Department of Natural Resources.  The DNR has issued a draft permit and will hold hearings about the air pollution from the proposed plant, and this gives us another opportuntity to make our voices heard on this critical issue. Please mark your calendars for the DNR public hearings, and e-mail a comment to: Steven.Dunn@wisconsin.gov.

  • The plant will spew more global warming pollution than other Wisconsin plants that are burning 100% coal.
  • It will add to the soot pollution that thickens our air and causes health advisories.
  • It will make our air quality worse, even as we work to clean up our air and meet EPA’s health standards.
  • It will pump more mercury pollution into our air, even as we work to reduce mercury pollution and make our fish once again safe to eat.

OFFSHORE WIND REPORT RELEASED: COMMENT TODAY!
The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently released the DRAFT report of the Wind on the Water Study Group and its supporting Work Groups.  The report summarizes a preliminary investigation into offshore wind generation, and includes key findings and challenges.  Click here to read the final report. Read over the report and Sierra Club’s talking points below, and then click here to make a comment to the PSC in support of responsible, renewable offshore wind energy. Deadline for comments on the Offshore Wind Report is Monday, November 10, 2008

  • Wisconsin has the ability to tap into significant offshore wind resources in Lake Michigan that could provide a strong and steady supply of energy.
  • Offshore wind holds the potential of generating more than enough energy to meet Wisconsin’s entire in-state Renewable Portfolio Standard—in a cost-effective manner.  The development of offshore wind could also lead to significant jobs creation benefits for the state. The key will be to ensure that offshore wind resources are developed and sited in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • We request that the PSC continue its investigation of critical data gaps, such as measured offshore wind speeds and potential avian impacts. The state should remain open to all possible options of developing clean, renewable energy and creating jobs, and should move quickly to expedite the development of the most promising options.  We believe that offshore wind has the potential to be one of those options and thus deserves a fast, but thorough, investigation into the outstanding questions surrounding the environmentally appropriate development of this technology.
