Great Waters Group Blog about the Great Lakes

Great Waters Group is a Sierra Club member group of the John Muir Chapter (WI). We serve over 3,000 Sierra Club members in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, & Waukesha counties.

Sierra Club groups are run by their members who volunteer to promote environmental sustainability by taking action on local issues and educating others to understand the issues and opportunities available to make informed decisions that will better protect our shared environment.  Our group coordinates many different activities and outings throughout the year so our members can also enjoy and appreciate the wonders of the outdoors and experiences of others.

Conservation Issues
The Conservation section of the Great Waters Group site is organized into five focus areas, which can be explored by using the navigation bars on the left of this page.  Local issues and recommendations for what action you can take can be found there as well. If want to know how to make contact with your representatives, take a look at Take Action Now.

Conservation Focus Areas

• Local Issues
• Global Warming (& Energy)
• Parks & Land Habitat
• Sustainable Growth
• Transportation
• Water

Conservation Committee
The Conservation Committee, chaired by Dale Olen, brings together a group of volunteers who review environmental issues, prioritize those issues and recommend which issues the Great Waters Group (GWG) should act on, and formulate position statements for the Executive Committee to adopt and present to the public.

The focus areas each have their own committee and the chairs of each make up the Conservation Committee.  These Committees help to keep our GWG members up-to-date on local and global environmental issues. The chairs of the four Committee's are as follows:

• Global Warming & Energy (John Bahr, Chair)
• Water (Dale Olen, Chair)
• Parks & Land Habitat (Michael Sebzda, Chair)
• Transportation & Sustainable Growth (Bill Moore)

Michael Sebzda also represents the Sierra Club at the monthly meetings of the Milwaukee County Conservation Coalition (MCCC or MC3), a group of local environmental organizations working together on specific issues.

Conservation Volunteers Are Needed
We need volunteer members to help our four sub-chairs stay abreast of the issues that continually change.  Specifically we need help by attending public meetings, keeping up on news, helping to keep our website current, and supporting issue campaigns at appropriate times.  We welcome anyone with an interest who is willing to offer any amount of time.

If you are interested in doing something about conservation and environmental issues, please contact Dale Olen at daleolen@sbcglobal.net or by phone at 262-255-3628.  You are welcome to attend any Conservation Committee meeting to learn about what they are doing and how you can get involved as a volunteer.

Additional information about volunteering can be found on our Volunteer page.
