Great Waters Group is a Sierra Club member group of the John Muir Chapter (WI). We serve club members in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, & Waukesha counties.  Sierra Club groups are run by their members who volunteer to promote environmental sustainability by taking action on local issues and educating others to understand the issues and opportunities available to make informed decisions that will better protect our shared environment.  Our group coordinates many different activities and outings throughout the year so our members can enjoy and appreciate the wonders of the outdoors and the experiences of others.

Parks & Land Habitat

We are in dire need of more volunteers to help us with all of our conservation activities, expanding the role of the interest groups that comprise the Conservation Committee.

If you'd like to be involved in a conservation area, or have your own ideas for action that can be taken, please contact our Conservation Chair found on the About Us page

If you are not sure and want to find out more details about our volunteer opportunities, please see our Volunteer page.

Saving Trees:

Mary Braunreiter and Cheri Briscoe, our chair, represented our interests in preserving the natural succession of the trees in the Potters Forest, owned by the Milwaukee Public Schools. We worked with other local groups, including the Milwaukee County Conservation Coalition, to try to slow the march of development near the Seminary Woods in St. Francis, along the Milwaukee area's southern lakefront.

We are continuing to advocate for significant green-space in planning for the vacated We Energies property in St. Francis.  This land serves as a buffer to the outstanding Seminary Woods property to the north.  We do not oppose all development in the area, but we are looking to preserve access to the lakefront and protection of the forest.  The Friends of St. Frances Greenspace are our allies in this effort. Mark Gill is leading our involvement in this issue.
