Canoe/ Kayak the Oconomowoc River

When: Sun. Aug. 17 – 2:30 p.m.

Where: Loew’s Lake, Oconomowoc River north of the Town of Merton

Bring your canoe or kayak and join Cheri & Tom Briscoe for an easy afternoon paddle on the Oconomowoc River north of the Town of Merton to Loew’s Lake. The put-in is located near the intersection of County Highway Q and County Highways K & E.

Learn about some of the history of this area and see the value of preserving wetlands and riparian areas as we explore this glacially created river and lake. We may see some sandhill cranes, great blue herons, turtles and other species as we take a casual 3 hour cruise up and down the river. We’ll stop off at a local place for some grub afterwards.

If you have an extra seat or are looking for a partner to share your canoe with, let us know in case someone without a canoe wants to join us. Children are welcome.

Reservations are required. Contact Cheri or Tom Briscoe @ 414-390-0159 or email cherib@wi.rr.com. No raindate if cancelled due to weather.

Growing Power, December 8, 2007

Did you ever want to raise tilapia and perch in a greenhouse along with lots and lots of sprouts (in December!)? A group of 8 adults and 6 children had the opportunity to witness that and more in a Sierra Club A+ Youth tour of Growing Power (GP) in Milwaukee on December 8.

GP resides in a set of old green houses which have been there a long time. There are 4 long greenhouses that contain the sprout (we tasted sunflower and pea sprouts), fish and vegetable concessions. There are plants everywhere, several layers of shelving with beds of plants and also plants growing in hanging pots. It is green, green, green.

The fish’s water tanks are kept clean by recirculating the water through beds of water cress that are situated above the tanks. You have to see this to believe it.

GP is worm heaven! From one box of worm culture a few years ago, the worm weight on site is estimated at 5,000 pounds! We saw all phases of worm life and the kids had fun holding the creepy crawlers. The worms produce tons of “castings” which are basically worm poop and are fantastic fertilizer for the growing beds.

We all got a thrill when the GP director, Will Allen, dropped some food into the tilapia tank. About 20 fish literally jumped for joy right out of the water! Then he caught some in a net and let the children hold them. He said tilapia are so resilient they could stay out of the water for half a day and still survive.

Growing Power is located at 5500 W. Silver Spring Dr., Milwaukee. For more information see their website: http://www.growingpower.org/
